Though it may seem like nothing more than a cosmetic issue, keeping your dog's nails trimmed is important for their health and well-being. Unless your dog is very active outdoors, their nails are unlikely to become worn down on their own, and if they grow too long, they could break or splinter. Too-long nails can also curl back and grow into the paw pad — a painful and dangerous condition that requires swift treatment from a veterinarian.
It might help to review the anatomy of the nail. Dogs’ nails are similar to our fingernails, except it is obvious which part is our nail and which is our finger (the part with the nerves.) For dogs, the nail is made up of an outer portion which is analogous to our fingernail and an inner portion which is more like the pink nail bed for us. The inner part is where the nerve lives. When you trim, you only want to trim the outer portion and avoid the nerve.
How to use
1. Press the nails out.
2. Turn on the LED light (need three LR44 batteries) to easily see the blood line, trim the transparent part.
3. Round the edges of the nail with a file after trimming.
